K-5 AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
How many opportunities are there for children to give shape to their imagination? How about a place where children work side-by-side with professional artists to fuel their curiosity and develop a creative voice? Welcome to Create, where endless possibilities within the studio bring your child’s ideas to life.
Our programming for children encourages creativity and self- expression. In fact, the studio’s air is filled with excitement and wonder as children develop life-long skills that can be carried with them into other areas of their lives.
Create's Art Lab is designed to give middle school students a chance to experiment with new ideas and a variety of artistic materials, with teaching artists.
The Art Lab offers a series of labs to choose from throughout the school year. Each lab meets right after school on Thursdays from 3:30 - 5:30p.m. and runs for 4-weeks. During the first week we focus on creative solutions and hands-on demonstrations to encourage skill development with new materials and techniques. In the following weeks students apply that knowledge by creating works of art and expressing their ideas in group critiques.
Love to sketch and want to sharpen your drawing skills? Come hang out at the studio and be part of the Sketch Club.
Everyone who joins receives a new sketchbook and a set of drawing pencils. Each Session we come up with a new drawing challenge and work with a variety of materials to develop a creative solution. Go on an adventure, sketch hidden worlds, explore the outdoors and make your imagination come to life.
The Sketch Club meets right after school on Tuesday's and runs from October to March
artist in residence
AIR is an intensive day program offering studio space to emerging High School artists. Each year CCAS offers four-month residencies in the Fall and Spring semesters. Five new artists are chosen for residency with ten students graduating from the program each year. Students who are enrolled in High School by the Fall of 2019 and reside in Charlevoix and Emmet County are eligible to apply. Recipients are awarded dedicated studio space, a stipend for art materials and transportation, and the opportunity to exhibit work in Gallery 151. Graduates of the AIR program have rich opportunities for successful personal and career development, gain a network of artists and resources and develop the confidence in themselves to explore artistic pursuits after graduation.
Art therapy uses a unique blend of specific techniques and a child’s natural creative process to improve physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Art therapists work with children to explore art making as a way of self-expression and empowerment.
When faced with life’s struggles, children may have trouble using words to explain their feelings and emotions. Our studio provides a positive outlet and a useful means of communicating and connecting a child’s inner and outer worlds. Create has partnered with Healing Paintbrush LLC to provide Art Therapy services in our studio.
