Create: Community Arts Studio is an arts and social service organization connecting members of the community through the arts. Create's innovative studio provides space and programming that meets the needs of the community and cultivates each person's innate ability to heal.
Sara Manchester is the creative force behind our studio. Receiving her B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Master’s in Art Therapy (MAAT) from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Sara has a strong understanding of the healing potential of art making. She has worked with children and families throughout her practicum in domestic violence shelters, hospice, and has designed and taught K-5 after school art programs. Sara’s clinical training involved working in the infusion center at McLaren Flint Cancer Center offering support to patients and developing art therapy activities for cancer survivors at the Flint Institute of Arts. offering support groups and activities for patients dealing with cancer. Sara completed her qualitative research on Open Studios across the United States and is currently working with Dr. Barbara McIntyre towards her ATR-BC in Art Therapy. Her heart lies inside the studio making artwork with children.
By designing an environment that allows people to think creatively, one develops an open mind to observe, describe, and interpret the world around them. In doing so, we begin to express ourselves without words and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our artistic materials demonstrate that there are multiple points of view to life's experiences. The desired result is a new awareness in both one's art work and personal accomplishments. We work hard to develop programming that has a lasting positive effect and believe that artistic outlets helps strengthen and enhance the quality of life for individuals, and contributes to the core components of a livable, sustainable community.
The Board is made up of a group of hard-working, dedicated individuals who believe in the arts and want to give back to their communities. We meet together on the first Monday of every month to discuss opportunities, form community partnerships and develop new ideas.
