Artist In Residence Program
artist in residence program
CCAS believes studio space is critical for artists and understands the importance of having dedicated space to work in. The AIR (Artist in Residence) program at Create is an intensive day program offered to emerging High School artists that forms a positive network of artists to expand one’s existing practice, work collaboratively, discuss art critically and inspire one another.
Each year, CCAS attracts 10 aspiring artists into the AIR program, offering an unparalleled studio experience. The A.I.R. is a four-month residency in the Fall and Spring semesters with five new artists chosen each residency . Students who are enrolled in High School by the Fall of 2018 and reside in Charlevoix and Emmt County are eligible to apply.
Recipients will be awarded dedicated studio space, a stipend for art materials and transportation, and the opportunity to exhibit work in Gallery 151. Through a series of group lectures, visiting artist and studio tours, students will deepen their artistic practice. During residency, AIR artists will gain exposure within their communities and throughout Northern Michigan.
The studio has clear goals for each month of residency and you will work
directly with the studio coordinator to achieve them.
1. Develop a personal studio practice
2. Write an Artist Statement
3. Learn how to photograph and market your work
4. Exhibit in Gallery 151
A 5’ 7’ dedicated studio space is available to you during studio hours. Each studio is Individually wired to adjust light levels with additional storage and a central meeting space for collaboration. You will share the mezzanine level with four other artists. An artist stipend of $200 will be awarded to each recipient to help cover the cost of materials and transportation. A Studio Coordinator will be assigned to manage student accounts and ensure participating artists are well supported with materials and inspiration.
Portfolio Review Days
Artists must complete an online application and attend Portfolio Review Day. The studio will determine recipients based upon the creativity and integrity of the individual, the ability to collaborate with other artists, and a strong desire to expand one's artists practice.
Applications must be electronically submitted before midnight on January 6th to be part of the 2019 Spring Artist in Residence Program. Please call the studio for further assistance.
